How long does the surrogacy process last

Since surrogacy is such a huge decision, there are legal and medical steps that parents have to go through.
“Typically, before the process begins, both the couple and the surrogate may be required to undergo thorough psychological evaluation and legal mediation for discussion on how the surrogate decision will affect their family dynamics and relationships,” Dr says. For this step, it’s recommended that the GC and the IPs each have their own lawyers.
The female IP then undergoes IVF treatments. “She takes medications that stimulate development of eggs, typically for about two weeks,” Dr. Lucidi says. “Then, an egg retrieval is performed. That means a needle, under ultrasound guidance, is advanced into the ovaries to extract eggs. Anesthesia is typically used so it’s not uncomfortable.”
The eggs are fertilized with the male IP’s sperm. “This happens on the day of the egg retrieval,” he says. “The resulting embryos are then cultured in the incubator for several, typically five, days.”
The GC, meanwhile, has her own treatments. She starts with estrogen at the same time that the female IP starts her IVF medications. “When the IP female has the egg retrieval, the GC is started on progesterone,” Dr says.”The resulting embryo is then transferred into the GC’s uterus, and the GC continues on the estrogen and progesterone to support the developing pregnancy. Most of the time a single embryo is transferred but occasionally two or three may be transferred.” The number of embryos is often specified in the contract.
The GC and the IP go through the pregnancy process together. “The couple will usually accompany the surrogate to her prenatal visits or any other medical visits related to the pregnancy, and are there for the birth of the child,” Dr says. “This arrangement can look very different from family to family.”
Of course, there can be other variations to this process, too. For example, if the couple hasn’t found a GC by the time of their egg retrieval, they can still go through with it and freeze the eggs for a later transfer. Some couples may also require donated sperm and/or eggs.
