The main stages of in vitro fertilization

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the joining of a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm in a laboratory. In vitro means outside the body. Let’s consider the main stages of in vitro fertilization (IVF). The first step is stimulation, in which the woman is given drugs called fertility drugs to increase egg production. The next step is to extract the egg, for which a small operation called follicular aspiration is performed. After extraction, insemination and fertilization are carried out. The man’s sperm is placed together with the best quality eggs. The mixing of sperm and egg is called insemination. If the chance of fertilization is low, the sperm can be injected directly into the egg. This is called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The next step is embryo cultivation. When the fertilized egg divides, it becomes an embryo, after about 5 days a normal embryo has several cells that are actively dividing. And the final stage is embryo transfer, the obtained embryos are placed in the woman’s womb.
