What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is an arrangement whereby a woman carries a pregnancy for another couple or person. Surrogate motherhood is divided into traditional and gestational. In the traditional method, the egg of the surrogate mother is used and the child has a genetic connection with her. This can cause ethical, legal and psychological problems. So according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), there are surrogacy programs that do not support traditional surrogacy. In gestational surrogacy, an embryo is created by in vitro fertilization (IVF) using the egg and sperm of the intended parents or donors. The created embryo is placed in the uterus of a surrogate mother. So the child will have no genetic connection with the surrogate mother. According to 2013 statistics, 18,400 children were born through gestational surrogacy in the United States. The most common reasons for surrogacy are absence of a uterus or malformations, medical conditions where the pregnancy could be life-threatening for the mother or child, multiple failed IVF attempts, same-sex couples, and a single man. The best way to start the surrogacy process is to contact a surrogacy agency. Professionals of the agency will save unnecessary problems, stress and save your time.
