Surrogacy Continued
Surrogacy is an agreement under which a woman carries a child for another person or couple.
For many people, for completely different reasons, this is the only possibility to have children.
Surrogate motherhood can be traditional and gestational.
In the traditional method, the egg of the surrogate mother is used, so she has a genetic connection with the child.
Due to ethical and legal difficulties, this method is used everywhere, and in some countries it is prohibited altogether.
And with gestational surrogacy, an embryo created by the method of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is transferred to the womb of the surrogate mother using the egg and sperm of the intended parents or donors, if necessary.
Therefore, with the gestational method, the surrogate mother does not have any genetic connection with the child.
Also, agreements with surrogate mothers can be commercial or altruistic.
With commercial surrogacy, financial compensation is provided for the surrogate mother.
In case of altruistic surrogacy, only compensation for costs related to pregnancy and childbirth is provided.
