More about assisted reproductive technologies (ART)

For many people, assisted reproductive technologies (ART) is the only way to realize their dreams of parenthood.

According to the latest data, more than 7 million children in the world have been conceived with the help of ART.

ART refers to medical methods and procedures that help people achieve pregnancy when natural conception is not possible.

Assisted reproductive technologies are generally divided into two types, artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF).

The artificial insemination procedure is called intrauterine insemination.

The most common today is in vitro fertilization (IVF), when a woman’s egg is fertilized by a man’s sperm in a laboratory.

This method also uses intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), whereby the best sperm is selected and injected directly into the egg.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF):

IVF is perhaps the most well-known and widely used form of ART. This procedure involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body and then implanting the fertilized embryo into the uterus. IVF has provided countless couples with the opportunity to overcome infertility issues caused by various factors, including fallopian tube blockages, male infertility, and unexplained fertility problems.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI):

ICSI is a specialized form of IVF where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg to facilitate fertilization. This technique is particularly beneficial for cases of severe male infertility, where traditional IVF may be less effective.

Egg and Sperm Donation:

For individuals or couples facing challenges with egg or sperm quality, donor eggs or sperm can be utilized. This option enables those struggling with genetic or fertility issues to experience the joys of parenthood. It also plays a crucial role in LGBTQ+ family-building, allowing same-sex couples to become biological parents.

Surrogacy:

Surrogacy involves a woman carrying and delivering a child on behalf of another individual or couple. Whether gestational surrogacy (using the intended mother’s or a donor’s egg) or traditional surrogacy (using the surrogate’s own egg), this method provides an alternative path to parenthood for those who may not be able to carry a pregnancy to term themselves.

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT):

PGT is a cutting-edge technology used in conjunction with IVF to screen embryos for genetic disorders before implantation. This helps reduce the risk of passing on certain genetic conditions to the child.

While ART has undeniably transformed the possibilities for starting a family, ethical considerations, accessibility, and the evolving landscape of reproductive medicine continue to be topics of discussion. As technology advances and research progresses, the field of ART holds promise for even more innovative solutions, offering renewed hope to individuals and couples pursuing the dream of parenthood.
