Story of a surrogate mother from the UK about her experience
At 39, Claire Kelly has two boys of her own and has been a surrogate mother three times for two other couples.
Surrogate motherhood is traditional and gestational.
In the traditional method, the surrogate mother’s ovum is used and she has a genetic connection with the child she gives birth to.
In Kelly’s cases, gestational surrogacy took place, that is, an embryo conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF) in laboratory conditions and using the eggs and sperm of the intended parents was transferred to her womb.
Wanting to help someone and seeing the couple’s faces when they realized they had become parents was the best motivator to not stop.
In the UK, the number of parental orders following surrogacy has tripled compared to 10 years ago.
The Law Commission of England and Wales, as well as Scotland, are proposing to allow expectant parents to become legal parents after the birth of a child, which will make life much easier for all parties involved in the surrogacy process.
