What is surrogacy and sperm, egg and embryo donation?

Surrogacy is an agreement under which a woman carries a child for another person or couple.

Gestational surrogacy implies that an embryo conceived by the method of in vitro fertilization (IVF) using sperm and eggs of the intended parents or donors is transferred to the womb of the surrogate mother.

With egg donation, the intended parents will only be genetically related to the child if they use the intended father’s sperm to fertilize the egg.

Donors must be of legal age between 21 and 34 years old. Sperm donors must be of legal age, ideally under 40 years of age, to minimize potential increased risks.

Like egg donors, sperm donors can be anonymous or known (referred).

Embryo donation is a procedure that allows embryos created by individuals undergoing infertility treatment to be transferred to other infertile patients to help them achieve pregnancy.
